Leading in a Multi-Generational Workforce

One of the key issues that conversations I have with leaders keep returning to is the challenges associated with multi-generational workforces. Research suggests that whilst many approaching retirement age are looking for a change in role, very few are looking to retire completely. This leaves a workforce made up of more generations than ever before and ones that have very different values, motivations and expectations of work. So, how do you create a culture where a Boomer or Gen X can work effectively with a Gen Z or Gen Alpha?

My belief is that it all comes down to empathy, understanding and allowing difference to exist. As a Gen X myself, I know how hard it can be to let go of your belief that everyone should approach work the way that you do. However, the world of work is changing and great leaders acknowledge that we have a lot to learn from those who are joining the workforce with new and different ideas about what it means to be “high performing”. It starts with listening and asking questions of those you see as different rather than judging them for being “lazy”, “entitled” or “disrespectful”. By listening and understanding their perspective we can create a culture where, together, all generations can develop a better working environment where both stretched objectives can be achieved and people can thrive. After all, do we really want to perpetuate a world where being a highly strung workaholic is both expected and rewarded?
